This webinar is aimed at researchers and other stakeholders engaging in participatory, co-created and PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement) research, to provide an introduction to research ethics in this framework. After a short general overview of ethics in research with human participants, we will examine current Austrian and international research ethics practice and its tools and methods, from research design to publication. We will then use examples from real-life research projects to illustrate some of the specific ethical challenges and opportunities that arise when patients and/or members of the public become co-researchers. We will discuss how researchers planning PPIE or participatory research can ensure ethical standards are adhered to throughout the project life cycle, and where they can find support, advice or – where not provided by their own institution –  formal ethics review. Afterwards, there will be space for your input and questions.

After this webinar participants will:

• Know the basic principles of ethics in research with human participants and understand the purpose of these principles
• Have an overview of current international and Austrian ethics practice
• Understand the role of institutional ethics committees, their remit and limitations
• Be able to describe the methods and tools used to ensure ethical research (e.g. consent forms) and their limitations
• Be aware of the specific ethical challenges arising in PPIE and participatory research
• Know where to turn for advice, support and formal review to ensure ethical standards in their own PPIE or participatory research
